REFLECTION:

Han Leera, an exchange student from Korea.

As an exchange student here for only one semester, I was not sure of choosing Chinese 1 module. It is because I thought that one semester would be too short to learn a new language and from my experience, I didn’t like to memorize Chinese Characters. However, I realised majority in Singapore speaks Chinese so I thought taking Chinese would be a wise choice.
I feel that learning Chinese is very interesting as they have different characters but similar pronunciation. Sometimes the tone marks confuse me but as a Korean, I am quite familiar with Chinese.
I really enjoyed the times I spent doing this project as I practiced what I have learned in these 9 weeks in Chinese lessons and exchanged ideas with my other group members’ who have brilliant ideas.
These days, I am trying to understand what the Chinese students say in Chinese around campus. Even though I can only understand the basic ones, I feel that our professor and tutor have done a very good job as with their help, I managed to understand most of the basic conversation within 9 weeks.
I promise myself that I will further improve my Chinese when I am back in Korea.

Olivia Victoriana, Year 1 Statistics student

I feel that this project has been a wonderful experience as it is my first time making a

blog and video in Chinese. It was quite tough initially as all of us do not have any

experience in this and we have to come up with our own script in Chinese.

Thankfully, we have Yijia who has been very helpful throughout this project. With her

guidance, we know which word to use for certain phrases.

The difficulty that we face while doing this project is that we are not used to the language

so it took us some time to memorize our dialogue.

I never regret taking LAC1201 this semester as since young, I have always wanted to

learn Chinese. feel embarrass not knowing how to speak simple Chinese and not even

knowing how to write my own Chinese name despite being a Chinese.

And after taking this module for just 9 weeks, I can speak simple Chinese to my friends.

Through this project, I also learnt new words which can be quite useful in daily life. In

addition to it, I have forged new friendships.

I hope you guys enjoy the video that we have come up with! Thank you Zhang laoshi and

Li laoshi for being such wonderful and great teachers.

Jeremiah Patrick Wardana, Year 1 Engineering student

Making this video project is such an enriching journey for me. I never thought doing

‘homework’ could bring this much fun. I always wanted to learn Chinese language since I

was in primary school, but I had not been able to since I was always busy with other

commitments in schools. Hence, taking this module in University level brings much

enthusiasm inside me, as I look forward to finally learn my ancestor’s language.

Looking beyond the expected outcome of improving our Chinese language skills, I also

value the experience which I had with my team members and friends. As the saying goes,

these little moments that we spend together will be the ones that remain in our memories

forever. I hope I can do very well for this module, and who knows, most likely I’m going to

take Chinese 2 next Semester ! yeay !! ^^ 谢谢!

我爱 汉语!

Arivainthan Gem King, Year 1 Chemical Engineering student.

The video project was both fun and enriching experience for me. Ovearll, learning

Chinese had been a great experience for me. Back when I was in my secondary school and

high school, I had a lot of friends who can speak Chinese fluently. Eventhough not knowing

Chinese was not a barrier to our friendship, deep in my heart, I always wished that I know

and understand what my friends say whenever they speak in Chinese.

The Chinese module has really helped me by providing me with an opportunity to learn

this language for real. Continuous assesments and tests was really tedious and time

consuming for me, but I must say without those things, it would have been impossible for

me to learn Chinese language to the fullest. To all those who are taking this module as

well, kudos to you guys and I really hope you enjoyed as much as I do.

I REALLY LOVE CHINESE LANGUAGE!!!!!!!!

Joshua Caesario Arief, Year 1 Engineering student.

This project is indeed a very enriching experience for us and personally I have learnt a

lot of things through this group work. It gives me a real opportunity to use my newly

learnt Chinese in practice. The whole process is also full of fun and we really enjoy it. From

the writing of the script to the actual taking of the video to the editing is enjoyable. Though

we need to set aside our busy schedule to do this, it is worth it. And to be able to really

interview native Chinese speaker really boost my confidence in speaking Chinese. Through

working together, we also form good friendships with each other. I always want to learn

Chinese as most of my friends can speak Chinese. And this module has helped to be able to

speak and write and listen in Chinese in a very short time. Overall, this module really rocks

and I hope I can do well for this module.
